Historical facts

Koutouloufari is listed in two documents "The villages of Crete" of Fr. Barozzi in 1577 (fo 24v) named Catafari metochio and in the list of Basilicata as Cutrufari.
In Petros Kastrofilakas list there is an indication of the settlement Zambagniana ( 95 K ) by 62 residents of the surname Zampani (Zanpani), referred to in a document of 1271, the village which we see in a map of Coronelli. This settlement does not exist today but is believed to be the beginning of Koutouloufari village.
The main temple in the village is that of St. Basil. Near the sea, in the northeast of the village is the small church of St. Nicholas, built on the ruins of an early Christian basilica.
