Crete is known for its ancient monasteries that hold precious Christian relics. Among the most popular are the monasteries of Priveli, Toplou and Kerr.
The Priory Monastery, founded in the 16th century by the Priory Priveli, is located 37 km from Rethymnon. The monastery, consisting of two parts, only one of which is open to visitors, and is known for its ancient icons.
The monastery of Toplou, located near the town of Sitia, was erected by the Turks on the ruins of a more ancient monastery, supposedly built in the Venetian period in honor of the Mother of God and John the Divine. In the church at the monastery there are unique icons and frescoes.
The monastery of Kerra was built at the beginning of the 14th century in honor of the Mother of God Kera - it was one of the most important centers of Christianity in Greece. The monastery is popular among pilgrims seeking here, in order to see or touch the miraculous icon of the Mother of God.
